No means No: Let’s talk about rape

Findings from a National Survey carried out in 2014 on  Violence Against Children in Nigeria confirmed one in four  females reported experiencing sexual violence in childhood  with approximately 70% reporting more than one incident of  sexual violence. In the same study, it was found that 24.8% of  females’ ages 18 to 24 years experienced sexual abuse prior to  age 18 (WARIF, 2020). UNICEF (2015) reported that one in ten  boys experience sexual violence before the age of 18 in  Nigeria, however, the male child is less likely to disclose their  experiences due to stigma and other societal norms.

On the 18th of July in 2020, TTLF organized a workshop in  Makoko, Lagos State, themed “No Means No: Let’s Talk about  Rape” to address the rape pandemic. Two workshops were  offered, one for thirty teen boys and the other for thirty teen  girls. The workshop was co-facilitated by Mrs. Joy Onosore, a  Counsellor at Mirabel Centre, and John Akinola, who develops  programs at the Freedom Foundation. Facilitators discussed  the myths about rape, sexual assault, consent, statutory rape,  survivor vs victim mindset, how to report abuse, types of  substances and its effect on the body and society, and  provided resources.

Its’s been a productive and fulfilling journey thus far. We couldn’t  have done it alone. We appreciate all the support we received from  our funders, donors, partners, volunteers, supporters and clients.  We have so much work ahead and look forward to having you by  our side.
